Many can identify tenses on paper or explain grammar rules in English, however, when asked to speak or communicate naturally, they fall silent. This gap between "knowledge" and "use" only highlights a fundamental flaw in how English is taught in Mexico.

The Difference Between Studying and Using English
Learning English through memorization is not the same as acquiring the language. Memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules helps with recognition but does not build the ability to communicate. Language is a skill that is developed through use, not through studying rules alone.
Students need opportunities to speak, listen, negotiate meaning, and receive real-time feedback. Fluency grows when learners USE English to express ideas, emotions, and opinions in real conversations. Without this, students remain stuck in a cycle of passive knowledge.

Why Fluency Comes From Practice, Not Textbooks
Fluency is built in the mouth, not the workbook. No one becomes fluent by only learning about English. Fluency happens when learners:
Speak and hear English regularly (with a Native English Speaker, if possible)
Engage in conversations that require quick thinking
Make mistakes and get corrected naturally
Connect with others through language
Fluency means being understood and responding naturally. It is not about having a certificate, a perfect test score, or a long streak on a language app. Real fluency shows when communication flows without hesitation.
The Role of Native Teachers in Building Fluency
Conversational English with native speakers is essential, not a luxury. Native teachers provide:
Natural rhythm and pronunciation
Real-world vocabulary beyond textbook phrases
Insights into cultural nuances, tone, and meaning
When students learn from native speakers, they stop translating in their heads and start thinking directly in English. This shift is crucial for developing confidence and fluency.

Personal Experience with Traditional English Education
I once supported traditional English teaching methods and used Cambridge materials as designed. For years, I followed the system faithfully. But after seeing the results firsthand, I realized the approach was not working. Students could pass written exams but struggled to speak or understand spoken English in real situations.
This experience made it impossible for me to ignore a fundamental truth: the system prioritizes memorization over communication and test scores over actual language use. According to national and international assessments, Mexico ranks near the bottom in English proficiency, with 79 percent of students demonstrating virtually no functional knowledge of English despite years of study. This is not an accident; it is the predictable outcome of a system that teaches about English rather than for English.
Many schools promote “English proficiency” through charts, certificates, and test scores as if these metrics are synonymous with real ability. However, when they hire a Native English Teacher, they immediately constrain that teacher with rigid rules, outdated curricula, and a test-centric culture that kills opportunity. The result is not better communication, but more memorization dressed up as progress.
Schools are not interested in changing their mindset. They want results that fit the system they already defend. They are comfortable with superficial metrics because superficial metrics are easier to measure and easier to control. Real language use is messy, dynamic, and requires risk. It cannot be captured in a bubble test.
This is precisely why native English speakers rarely remain in Mexican schools and why, despite decades of English instruction, the majority of students cannot carry on a conversation or participate confidently in real contexts. A system that rewards recall and punishes risk will never produce speakers; it will produce test takers. Followers and not Leaders.
The statistics are clear: what is being measured is not what matters. Mexico’s English outcomes demonstrate that memorization without meaningful use does not work.
If the goal is true communicative ability, then the system itself must be challenged.
Change is not optional. It is urgent.

Practical Steps to Fix English Education in Mexico
Moving beyond memorization is not complicated, but it does require courage. Schools and educators must stop pretending that more rules will produce better speakers and instead commit to how language is actually acquired.
Real improvement begins when classrooms prioritize use over recall:
Speaking and listening are treated as the core of every class, not as optional activities
Role-playing and real-life scenarios replace artificial exercises
Native English speakers are brought in for consistent, structured conversation, not symbolic appearances
Students are trained to think in English rather than translate word by word
Grammar supports communication instead of dominating it
These are not experimental methods. They are how fluent speakers are made. When students use English actively, confidence follows naturally.
What Happens When English Is Taught for Use
When students are taught to use English rather than memorize it, the results are immediate and measurable. Language stops being an academic obstacle and becomes a functional tool.
Students gain the ability to:
Access higher-quality employment opportunities
Communicate confidently with people around the world
Engage fully with English-language media, culture, and information
Travel, study, and work internationally without language as a barrier
Fluency opens doors. Memorization does not. No certificate replaces the ability to communicate clearly, and no test score matters when real conversation begins.
